NOW Wireless to work with Peek on New Traffic Management System for Coventry

Press Release: 23rd October 2006

In a report presented to Coventry City Council’s Cabinet on 17th October it was announced that the present traffic control system had outlived its life expectancy and that new legislation and initiatives required an expansion of the service. It was recommended that a series of contracts be awarded that would lead to the upgrading of its Urban Traffic Management System.

The new Traffic Management Act requires the Council to take additional responsibility for managing traffic within the city, to increase traffic capacity and reduce delays.

The new PrimeLines project is to be expanded to improve bus operations throughout Coventry, this will include the enforcement of bus lanes and providing real-time information.

The new Urban Traffic Management System will utilise a fibre network (implemented by the City Council) that will be aided by a wireless network system to assist communications between city offices. In addition, a comprehensive variable message system will be instated to provide on-street car park guidance and enable incidents on the network to be managed effectively by informing drivers of diversions.

It was announced that the contracts would be awarded as follows:

Now Wireless Ltd with Peek for the provision of the Urban Traffic Control System, Control Room and Communications System
Peek for equipment maintenance
Techspan Ltd for car park variable message system
Tenet for the common database for system monitoring and management
Tyco for the CCTV camera system for site observation and bus lane enforcement

The real time information system is being provided by ACIS through a contract awarded by Centro on behalf of the City Council.

Consultants for the project are Jacobs and Faber Maunsell.

The total value of the contracts is approximately £6.5m, which is being funded through the Local Transport Plan (LTP), PrimeLines and developers contributions.

The project will commence this autumn and should be fully implemented by March 2008 with ongoing maintenance agreements to October 2011.
